Melbourne Museum tickets price has one unusual feature that decides everything: most visitors do not pay. Children, concession card holders and members all enter free. Whether booking ahead saves you anything depends entirely on which of those you are.

If you hold a concession card, book direct or just turn up. Free entry covers Carer Card, Health Care Card, Pension Card, Student Card and Veterans Affairs Card holders. Don’t buy a discounted adult ticket from anyone — you’re entitled to enter for nothing, and no third-party rate beats free.
Seniors should also book direct at $12, which is below any general adult rate.
Full-fare adults are the only group where booking ahead saves money. General admission through TickYourList runs about $13 against the museum’s $18, and children stay free either way — so two adults with two kids pay roughly $26 rather than $36.
Special exhibitions are ticketed separately on top of general admission, typically in the $24 to $35 range for headline touring shows.

Dinosaur Walk is the headline gallery, running the length of the building with mounted skeletons along a full-height glass wall. It’s the part children remember.
Horridus, one of the most complete Triceratops fossils ever found, sits in Gandel Gondwana Garden.
The Forest Gallery is a living southern rainforest under a glass canopy at the centre of the museum, with birds, reptiles and amphibians. It runs its own micro-climate — noticeably warmer and more humid than the rest of the building, which makes it welcome in July and less so in February.
Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre holds the First Peoples exhibition and is included in every general admission ticket. It’s among the most carefully curated Indigenous history spaces in the country and deserves more than a walk-through.
The Melbourne Story houses Phar Lap’s mounted hide, still the single most-visited object in the museum.
Our Wondrous Planet opened in September 2025 as a permanent gallery covering four biomes — reef, rainforest, ice and soil — with live and preserved specimens and a First Peoples-led perspective on biodiversity. Included in general admission.
The Children’s Gallery is aimed at younger kids and can run on timed entry slots during peak periods, so ask at the desk when you arrive rather than assuming walk-in access.
Touring exhibitions are ticketed on top of general admission and rotate quickly — shows that were headline draws a few months ago have since closed while older guides still list them as current. Check what’s actually running before building a trip around a specific exhibition, and check whether timed entry applies.
IMAX Melbourne shares the building but sits entirely outside museum ticketing. A film is a separate transaction unless a combo is running, and adult tickets typically run $22 to $28.
