The best time to visit Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium comes down to three choices: the month, the day of the week, and the hour you walk through the gate. Get all three right and you can stand in front of the Kuroshio Sea tank with room to breathe. Get them wrong and you’ll watch whale sharks over a wall of phones.

If you want one answer: a weekday morning in November or April. Both give comfortable weather and manageable crowds. January and February are quieter still, while Golden Week and August are the busiest stretches of the year.

At a glance

  • Best months: October, November, April
  • Quietest: January and February
  • Busiest: Golden Week (late April to early May) and late July to August
  • Best time of day: 8:30am opening, or after 4pm
  • Time needed: 2–3 hours for the aquarium, 4–6 with Ocean Expo Park

What It Costs

TicketPrice
Adult¥2,180
High school student¥1,440
Elementary / junior high¥710
Under 6Free

Entry to Ocean Expo Park itself is free, including the dolphin lagoon, sea turtle pool and manatee pool. You’re only paying for the aquarium building.

Third-party platforms typically discount 15 to 20% below the window price, and groups of 20 or more get roughly 20% off. Unlike much of mainland Japan, convenience store ticket machines aren’t a confirmed option here, so don’t plan on buying at a Lawson or FamilyMart.

One thing to check on any reseller ticket: some require you to exchange a voucher for a physical ticket at a separate counter before entering. Direct-entry tickets scan straight at the gate, which is the point of buying ahead.

Why Timing Matters

Churaumi isn’t a quick photo stop. It sits inside Ocean Expo Park on the Motobu Peninsula, and the star is the Kuroshio Sea tank — 35 metres across, 10 metres deep, 7,500 cubic metres, with an acrylic panel 8.2 metres high and 22.5 metres wide. Whale sharks and manta rays glide right past it.

Most of the aquarium is indoors, so weather doesn’t stop you enjoying it. What changes month to month is how many people are standing next to you.

Month by Month

Figures combine long-term Naha averages with crowd patterns. The north coast runs slightly cooler and windier, so treat them as a guide.

Spring and autumn win because they dodge the two worst stretches. Rainy season runs mid-May to late June; typhoon season runs July to October, with August and September riskiest. Golden Week and mid-August bring the biggest crowds.

Winter or Summer?

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium Best Time to Visit: Month-by-Month Guide — travel image 6

Winter is the calm option. January and February are quietest, with the cheapest flights and hotels from December to February. You also get whale watching season and Japan’s earliest cherry blossoms.

The catch is the chill. Daytime temperatures sit around 17 to 19°C, so bring a sweater or light jacket. The sea drops to about 21°C in February, ruling out swimming at the park beach. Hours are shorter, closing at 18:30.

Summer brings energy and a lot more people. Late July through August, when Japanese school holidays run, sees the highest visitor numbers.

There’s a real upside though. Churaumi Night Aquarium runs 1 to 31 August 2026, with opening hours extended to 21:00 and last admission at 20:00. An evening visit skips the midday tour-bus crush and the worst of the heat.

The evening discount is confirmed for 2026. From 5:00pm between 18 July and 31 August, adults drop from ¥2,180 to ¥1,730, high school students from ¥1,440 to ¥1,140, and elementary and junior high from ¥710 to ¥560.

Two conditions catch people out. Evening tickets must be bought the day before your visit — you can’t decide at 4pm and turn up. And during the Night Aquarium period the rest of the park closes at 19:00, so the Manatee Pavilion, Sea Turtle Pavilion and Dolphin Lagoon shut while the aquarium stays open.

Hours

Peak windows8:30–20:0019:00
August 2026 Night Aquarium8:30–21:0020:00 (rest of park closes 19:00)

Standard hours are 8:30 to 18:30 with last admission at 17:30. Extended hours apply only in set peak windows, so they aren’t given all summer.

The verdict: winter is better for the aquarium itself, because you get space and calm. Summer is better if you want the night programme and a beach afterwards. If your dates flex, aim between them — April or November.

Time of Day and Day of Week

Even in a busy month, the clock is your best tool.

The rush runs from 11am to 3pm, when the tour buses arrive. The hall is relatively empty between 8:30 and 10:00, and thins again after 4pm.

Tuesday or Wednesday is noticeably calmer than Saturday. The official website publishes a congestion forecast calendar — worth checking before you book anything.

Plan Around the Feedings

Feedings give the day a rhythm. Manta rays at 9:30. Whale sharks at 15:00 and 17:00. Feedings may be cancelled depending on the animals’ condition.

The whale shark feeding is the one people remember — the sharks stand upright in the water and gulp krill at the surface.

A smooth day: arrive at the opening, catch the manta feeding, tour Coral Sea and Deep Sea while the midday crowd peaks, eat and walk the park, then come back for the whale sharks in the afternoon.

Rain, Typhoons and Closures

Rain is the smaller worry — showers are common but rarely last all day, and the main exhibits are indoors.

Typhoons are the bigger one. They bring heavy rain for one to three days and can close attractions outright. If you’re travelling August to October, keep a spare day in the itinerary.

The aquarium also closes on the first Wednesday and Thursday of December for maintenance, and stays open over New Year.

Getting There

It’s a genuine trip from the south. About two hours by bus from Naha, at roughly ¥2,200 one way, or about 90 minutes driving. A rental car is quicker and more flexible.

The closest parking is the multi-storey P7 garage by the north gate, so arrive early.

Booking

Pick a weekday in April, October or November, arrive at 8:30, and build the day around the 9:30 manta feeding and the 15:00 whale sharks.

For the rest of the island, the wider list of things to do in Okinawa covers the castles, the beaches and the boat trips.

FAQs

How much are Churaumi Aquarium tickets?

¥2,180 for adults, ¥1,440 for high school students, ¥710 for elementary and junior high, free under 6. Entry to Ocean Expo Park itself is free. Third-party platforms typically discount 15 to 20%.

What are Churaumi Aquarium’s opening hours?

Standard hours are 8:30 to 18:30 with last admission at 17:30. Peak windows extend to 20:00, and August has run to 21:00. Extended hours apply only on set dates, so check the official calendar.

What is the best month to visit Churaumi Aquarium?

October and November, with mild weather and moderate crowds. April works well too. January and February are quietest if you’d rather have the tanks nearly to yourself, though cooler and windier.

What time should I arrive?

8:30am opening. The first hour is quietest and the manta ray feeding follows at 9:30. Crowds peak from 11am to 3pm as tour buses arrive, then ease after 4pm.

When are the whale shark feeding times?

Manta rays at 9:30am, whale sharks at 3:00pm and 5:00pm. Feedings can be cancelled if the animals aren’t in good condition, so check the daily schedule on arrival.

How long do you need at Churaumi Aquarium?

Two to three hours for the aquarium itself at a comfortable pace. Add the free dolphin lagoon, sea turtle pool and manatee pool, and budget four to six hours for the whole park.

How do you get to Churaumi from Naha?

About two hours by bus at roughly ¥2,200 one way, or around 90 minutes by car. Parking is at the multi-storey P7 garage by the north gate, which fills early in peak season.

Is Churaumi worth visiting on a rainy day?

Yes. The main exhibits are indoors, so rain rarely spoils them. Only the outdoor pools and park walks suffer, and Okinawan showers usually pass quickly rather than lasting all day.

Is Churaumi Aquarium open all year?

Yes, apart from the first Wednesday and Thursday of December for maintenance. It stays open over New Year. Extra closures can happen during typhoons, so check the official site if travelling August to October.

Do I need to book tickets in advance?

Not required, but advance tickets are usually cheaper and let you skip the counter. Check whether yours is direct entry or needs exchanging for a physical ticket first — that difference decides whether you actually save time.
