The Dome climb comprises 551 steep, narrow stairs and confined spaces, not suitable for certain individuals.

An elevator only goes up to the terrace; an additional 320 steps are needed to reach the summit.

Children must be at least 6 years old to climb the Dome and minors up to 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

Additional Details

Expect airport-style security checks with potential wait times during peak seasons; arrive 15–45 minutes early.

Note that the Dome and roof terrace may close during inclement weather.

Entry to St. Peter’s Basilica and the Dome could be suspended without notice due to religious events; alternative arrangements will be made.

The special access passage between the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica is closed on specific days; your guide will offer an alternative visit to the Pinacoteca Gallery.
