Venetian glassblowing has a rich history dating back to the Roman empire, where it was first used for lighting bathhouses. Through influences from the Byzantine Empire and trade relations with the Orient, Venice became renowned for its exceptional glass craftsmanship.
In the 1200s, the establishment of the Glassmakers Guild in Venice ensured the quality and exclusivity of the trade. Strict laws were implemented, including confining glassmaking to the Murano Islands to prevent fire hazards in Venice's wooden structures.
Over time, Murano became the hub of glassblowing in Venice, perfecting techniques to create a variety of everyday items such as cups, glasses, and mirrors. The art of shaping glass remained a closely guarded secret in the Venetian Republic.
Immerse yourself in the centuries-old tradition of Venetian glassblowing with a captivating tour.
Explore the enchanting world of glassblowing at an authentic glass factory showroom in St Mark's Square.
