If you're seeking a delightful escape from Bucharest, consider embarking on a full-day guided tour to Northern Bulgaria with a small group. After approximately an hour's drive from Bucharest, you'll cross the Danube River border into Bulgaria. Your first destination is the fascinating Rock-hewn Churches of Ivanovo. These ancient caves served as homes for monks from the 1220s to the 17th century, featuring intricately carved cells, churches, and chapels within solid rock. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, the site also boasts remarkable 13th-14th century frescoes worth admiring with your knowledgeable local guide.
Your journey continues to Veliko Tarnovo, often referred to as the City of Tsars, situated along the Yantra River. This city, renowned for its beauty, showcases a majestic fortress housing the remnants of the former Tsarevets Palace and the patriarchal church. During the medieval era, Veliko Tarnovo was a prominent cultural hub in Europe, a heritage that endures through its well-preserved architecture and quaint streets bustling with local artisans.
Indulge in a delectable lunch at one of Veliko Tarnovo's fine restaurants, savoring authentic Bulgarian cuisine and perhaps a glass of local wine (not included in the tour price). Your adventure then takes you to the nearby Village of Arbanassi, a serene hamlet steeped in history, featuring 17th- and 18th-century churches and stunning examples of Bulgarian National Revival architecture. As the tour concludes, you'll be chauffeured back to Bucharest, enriched by a day of exploring Bulgaria's cultural treasures.
